This work covers the period which intervened between Drake’s circumnavigation of the world at the close of the sixteenth century and the founding of Calcutta at the end of the seventeenth century. The aim of the author is to shed light upon those men who were true adventurers of the age seeking fortune by daring enterprise. The work is mainly based on the series of records preserved at the India office.
