Historians trace back Loya Jirga’s origins to 250 B.C. To the Parthians. The Aryans brought this democratic practice to the sub-continent, where it still flourishes in the form of Panchayats, but only at the village level. In the area now known as Afghanistan, this process evolved to serve as king-maker and to take decisions on important matters so much so that the entire Afghan nation came to acknowledge the Loya Jirga as truly representative.
